New Home for San Francisco Center for the Book

The San Francisco Center for the Book moved around the corner into their new space almost a year ago. And what a space it is! Betsy Davids and I visited last week. Here's what we saw as Chad Johnson, the studio manager and our friend, gave us a tour.

The letterpresses in the foreground, the gallery in the background.

The new hand press.

Ink!

The current exhibition is curated by gallery owner Donna Seager
and features work with
discarded books, found materials and textiles

Jody Alexander's work.
This piece is from her series of "Sedimentals."
A few of Lisa's pieces at top right.

Another exhibit, this one of work by Barbara Alexandra Szerlip
on the way to the bindery and classroom.

The classroom. On the wall are some Steamroller Prints.
Every year the Center rents a steamroller,
artists carve large sheets of linoleum,
and they ink them up and print them on paper, all done in the street!
Vendors sell prints, books, and art.
They call the event Roadworks.
Here are two pictures from the event in 2010:

Back out in the main printing area, the typecases
have much to say.

Aprons for all.

A sign propped in the conference room.

And back at the entrance,
instead of plaques honoring the donors
there are books with
the donors' names
on the spines.

A lovely space overall, filled with interesting nooks and crannies.
